TL;DR Two brothers have been arrested for allegedly exploiting the Ethereum blockchain to steal $25 million in crypto. The charges are the first of their kind, focusing on 'maximal extractable value' (MEV). Each brother faces up to 20 years in prison.
A Groundbreaking Case in Blockchain Fraud
Police in the United States arrested two brothers after prosecutors accused them of hacking the Ethereum blockchain to steal $25 million worth of crypto in about 12 seconds.
Authorities said the hackers exploited the 'maximal extractable value'** (MEV), the maximum amount of value that a user or group of users can extract from a given DeFi protocol or smart contract.
Anton Peraire-Bueno, 24, of Boston, and James Peraire-Bueno, 28, of New York, have been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, the Peraire-Bueno brothers are slated to appear in front of magistrate judges in Massachusetts and New York later today.
Unprecedented Legal Action
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams called the charges 'the first of their kind.' He stated, 'This alleged scheme was novel and has never before been charged.
However, as the indictment makes clear, no matter how sophisticated the fraud or how new the techniques used to accomplish it, the career prosecutors of this office will be relentless in pursuing people who attack the integrity of all financial systems.'
MEV has become a crucial factor in determining the profitability of DeFi strategies. It has led to new tools and techniques for maximizing returns. According to the indictment, the brothers reportedly targeted traders who operate MEV bots focusing on crypto arbitrage trading.
High Stakes and High Skills
The two siblings, who studied mathematics and computer science at prestigious universities, used their expertise in crypto trading to exploit the Ethereum blockchain.
Prosecutors noted that Anton and James Peraire-Bueno meticulously planned their heist, even researching ways to conceal their involvement.
'Throughout the planning, execution, and aftermath of the Exploit, Anton Peraire-Bueno and James Pepaire-Bueno also searched online for information about, among other things, how to carry out the Exploit, ways to conceal their involvement in the Exploit, cryptocurrency exchanges with limited 'know your customer' procedures that they could use to launder their criminal proceeds, attorneys with expertise in cryptocurrency cases, extradition procedures, and the very crimes charged in the indictment,' the DOJ said.
Facing Severe Consequences
If convicted, each brother faces a maximum penalty of **20 years in prison for each count.
'No matter how sophisticated the fraud or how new the techniques used to accomplish it, the career prosecutors of this office will be relentless in pursuing people who attack the integrity of all financial systems,' emphasized U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.
This case marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to regulate and secure the rapidly evolving world of decentralized finance.
