TL;DR According to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, Hamster Kombat's viral success and upcoming token launch on the TON blockchain could onboard hundreds of millions to Web3. Since its launch in March 2024, the game has attracted some 2390 million players. Durov's recent post highlights the game's booming metrics and the implications of its anticipated token airdrop.
Viral Growth of Hamster Kombat
Telegram Founder Pavel Durov told his channel's 2.7 million subscribers Hamster Kombat, a crypto game launched on his social media platform, has nearly 240 million users in only 81 days since its launch.
Durov said the game is a transformative force in digital services, signaling a major shift in how blockchain technologies are integrated with mass-market applications.
Durov noted the game took just 73 days since its March 2024 launch to reach 100 million monthly users. According to him, the Telegram mini app has 4-5 million new users joining daily, making it one of the fastest-growing digital services in the world.
Upcoming Token Launch
Durov also discussed the implications of Hamster Kombat's highly anticipated token airdrop. While the exact date is yet to be confirmed, the project's official roadmap indicates that onchain infrastructure development and in-game wallet implementation were completed in June.
"Soon, Hamster's team will mint its token on TON, introducing the benefits of blockchain to hundreds of millions of people," Durov wrote. Players have been able to link TON wallets in the game since June 2024.
Record-Breaking Achievements
Hamster Kombat has hit several world record milestones, as previously explored by Cointelegraph. The game allows players to earn coins by engaging with its YouTube content, where they can earn 100,000 coins for watching new videos.
The game's YouTube page is outpacing even Mr Beast's subscription numbers. The team has applied for a Guinness World Record as the first YouTube channel to gain over 10 million subscribers in one week.
Engaging Gameplay
Hamster Kombat is described as a "crypto exchange CEO simulator." Players start as a bald hamster, CEO of a cryptocurrency exchange, and can tap the avatar to generate in-game coins.
However, the core mechanic requires players to purchase exchange upgrades to improve their hourly profit. Players can also earn coins by referring friends or completing more difficult in-game tasks like solving a morse-code daily cipher.
"Hamster Kombat could be an alternative universal basic income (UBI) mechanism."
Social Media and Income Potential
The game's success raises intriguing questions about Web3 games becoming an alternative universal primary income mechanism. Hamster Kombat's YouTube channel features daily news and educational content on cryptocurrency, serving as an introduction to Web3 for newcomers.
The game's social media growth has resulted in staggering metrics, with 32 million YouTube subscribers, 11.3 million followers on X, and 49.4 million subscribers on its official Telegram channel.
