TL;DR Michael Kong, CEO of Fantom Foundation, has announced the launch of Sonic, a state-of-the-art blockchain technology designed for scalability and security. This new technology is set to revolutionize blockchain with its capacity to process 2,000 transactions per second and introduce a shared sequencer for L1 and L2 chains.

Michael Kong, CEO of Fantom Foundation, has recently revealed the launch of Sonic, a transformative blockchain technology that aims to significantly outperform current standards in terms of scalability and security. Sonic represents the culmination of two years of rigorous development, building on the foundation laid by the Opera network in 2019.

The Opera network, conceptualized by Andre Cronje, was a significant step forward, offering enhanced scalability and faster transaction finality compared to Ethereum. Despite its success, the network encountered challenges with congestion during peak times, prompting the Fantom team to innovate further.

Sonic's Technical Advancements To combat these issues, Sonic has been engineered to process an impressive 2,000 transactions per second (TPS) with sub-second finality, showcasing a tenfold increase over the Opera network's capacity.

The development of a shared sequencer for L1 and L2 chains is anticipated to handle over 180 million transactions daily, marking a significant leap forward in blockchain technology.

Fantom's Vision for the Future Fantom's roadmap includes several ambitious initiatives aimed at fostering growth and adoption. Among these are the creation of a trust-minimized bridge with Ethereum, simplification of staking processes, and the expansion of the Sonic Labs grant program to support innovative application development.

These efforts are complemented by a rewards campaign to encourage migration to the Sonic platform and plans for a canonical stablecoin to bolster DeFi activities.

"Sonic boasts an impressive capacity to process 2,000 transactions per second with sub-second finality, a significant improvement over Opera's 200 TPS."

Looking Ahead: Sonic's Potential Impact The introduction of supersets and the exploration of parallelization are on the horizon for Fantom, aimed at further improving the efficiency and performance of the Fantom Virtual Machine (FVM). These technological advancements promise to position Sonic as a leading contender in the blockchain space, offering unparalleled scalability, security, and functionality.

The Role of Stablecoins in Fantom's Ecosystem Recognizing the pivotal role of stablecoins in the DeFi ecosystem, Fantom is actively working towards the introduction of a canonical stablecoin.

This development is expected to facilitate seamless transactions and foster a more robust DeFi environment on both the Opera network and the new Sonic stack, highlighting Fantom's commitment to innovation and community engagement.
