TL;DR OpenAI has begun rolling out its long-awaited 'Advanced Voice' feature for select ChatGPT users. This highly anticipated update promises faster and more intuitive communication. However, it has not been without its controversies.
OpenAI has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the release of its 'Advanced Voice' feature for ChatGPT.
Announced on September 24, OpenAI revealed via a post on X that 'Advanced Voice is rolling out to all Plus and Team users in the ChatGPT app over the week.' This feature promises to revolutionize user interaction with the AI model, making it more seamless and natural.
A Humorous Apology
In a playful nod to the delays, OpenAI mentioned that the feature 'can also say 'Sorry I'm late' in over 50 languages'.
Initially slated for an earlier release, the 'Advanced Voice' feature has been eagerly awaited by users. This upgrade is integrated into ChatGPT's latest 4.0 model and introduces several enhancements to make interactions more human-like.
New Voices and Enhanced Features
As part of the 'Advanced Voice' feature, OpenAI has introduced five new voices: Arbor, Maple, SXol, Spruce, and Vale. These voices join the existing options of Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember.
Users of the ChatGPT Plus and Team tiers will gain staggered access to these new voices, which are designed to facilitate more natural and dynamic conversations. One of the standout features is the ability for users to interrupt the conversation and switch topics mid-conversation, adding a layer of flexibility and realism to interactions.
Custom Instructions and Memories
In addition to the new voices, OpenAI has included custom instructions and 'memories.' Users can input specific instructions to tailor the chatbot to their preferences.
The chatbot can also 'remember' important information from previous audio conversations, making future interactions more personalized and efficient.
However, it's worth noting that the feature still needs to be optimized for in-car Bluetooth or speakerphones, and background noises can interrupt the conversation.
Controversies and Complaints
Despite the excitement surrounding the new feature, some users on X have expressed disappointment. They claim the new voice options pale compared to the controversial 'Sky' voice model.
This model was initially planned to be voiced by actress Scarlett Johansson but was scrapped after a legal dispute. Johansson had declined the offer for personal reasons and was shocked to find an eerily similar vocal feature in the Sky model. OpenAI's CEO, Altman, maintained that any resemblance was coincidental.
'I was shocked, angered, and in disbelief over the chatbot's eerily similar vocal features,' Johansson stated.
Future Prospects
While the release of 'Advanced Voice' has been met with controversy, it marks a significant milestone in the evolution of AI communication.
As OpenAI continues to refine and optimize this feature, it is poised to set new standards in artificial intelligence.
Users can look forward to even more advancements that will make their interactions with AI more intuitive and human-like.
