TL;DR Despite the scarcity of venture capital compared to the previous crypto bull cycle, certain sectors are witnessing a surge in valuations, captivating investors' attention in 2024. At Web Summit Qatar, venture fund executives reveal their investment strategies and the qualities they seek in founders, highlighting the growing interest in artificial intelligence, climate tech, biotechnology, and healthcare.

As the dust settles from the frenzied investment pace of the last crypto bull cycle, venture capital seems to be finding new directions in 2024. During an engaging panel at Web Summit Qatar, moderated by Cointelegraph's editor-at-large Kristina Cornèr, a group of venture funds executives shared their insights on the current investment landscape. They discussed what sectors are drawing their attention and the attributes they value in startup founders.

According to Kevin Holmes of the Founders Network, there's a noticeable shift towards startups specializing in artificial intelligence, climate tech, biotechnology, and the healthcare industry. Holmes remarked, "This year, it feels like we're coming back, and we're on the verge of another sort of boom with GenAI," indicating a robust confidence in the transformative potential of these sectors.

Zach Coelius from Coelius Capital echoed this sentiment, particularly about artificial intelligence, noting a "tremendous amount of excitement" around AI startups. He highlighted the significant product improvements and gains made recently, suggesting a leap forward in technology that surpasses the incremental advancements of the past decade.

The panelists also shared their perspectives on what makes a founder stand out in this competitive environment. Adwa Aldakheel from Falak Investment Hub emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating, "I want to watch them fail because I know they [...] find another model, they will pivot and 70% of startups pivot. But it's a privilege as an investor to be a part of this journey for a founder that is driven by purpose, not just for a quick exit or a Forbes magazine cover."

For Coelius, the ability of a founder to think creatively and solve problems with new technologies is crucial, highlighting the advantage of original thinkers in the startup ecosystem. Kevin Holmes added that having a global mindset and seeking capital beyond local borders can significantly enhance a startup's prospects, especially for those aiming for the Silicon Valley's lucrative exit opportunities.

As venture capital navigates through the complexities of the current economic landscape, the insights shared at Web Summit Qatar provide a glimpse into the future directions of startup investments. With a focus on innovative technologies and resilient founders, the venture capital world is poised for another wave of transformative growth.
