TL;DR Vitalik Buterin recently expressed doubts about the long-term potential of DeFi, sparking criticism from the crypto community. Notable figures like Arthur from DeFinance Capital and Sam Kazemian from Frax Finance have voiced their disagreements.

Is the Ethereum co-founder doubtful about DeFi's long-term potential? One of his latest statements about DeFi on X suggests so. The crypto community immediately responded adversely to Buterin's comments.

In response to those reactions, Buterin said that if DeFi is to become sustainable, it needs to adhere to fundamental principles like permissionlessness and decentralization.

"There are so many centralization points that are rapidly growing and threats in the world's technology today," Buterin said, listing issues he perceives such as surveillance, economic risks from centralized AI, and potential dangers from emerging technologies like mind-reading tech (BCI).

Buterin firmly backed decentralized exchanges (DEXes) and decentralized stablecoins such as RAI, which he said he uses regularly. However, he believes USDC could be better than decentralized options, although he noted its widespread use and practicality, especially for international transactions and emerging markets.

"We are here to try to make the global economy and society more open and free," Buterin said.

Top crypto business leaders, such as DeFinance Capital founder and CIO Arthur and Frax Finance founder Sam Kazemian, have voiced their counter opinions.

Buterin believes the DeFi sector can only support the cryptocurrency sector's growth if it finds value outside the crypto ecosystem. He expressed concern over the present state of the DeFi ecosystem, particularly its over-reliance on crypto trading.

Community Backlash

The DeFi community has strongly criticized Vitalik's opinion. Crypto business leaders like Arthur and Sam Kazemian have publicly condemned the Ethereum leader on X.

Arthur's statement demands that Vitalik be introduced to how DeFi adds value to Ethereum. Arthur believes the founder of Ethereum must recognize the importance of DeFi to Ethereum's market value.

Meanwhile, though less aggressive, Sam Kazemian's statement also attacks Vitalik. It likens the Ethereum co-founder's opinion to the stance of blind Bitcoin supporters.

Sam's statement attempts to create an impression among DeFi enthusiasts that the blind BTC supporters and Vitalik share similar views on DeFi. It directly appeals to the DeFi community to take note of this shared confusion.

"The debate between the Ethereum founder and crypto business leaders has sparked a strong conversation about the future of DeFi in various crypto forums."

This ongoing debate has triggered a robust conversation about the future of DeFi across numerous crypto forums.
