TL;DR Web3 promises incredible opportunities for people worldwide, not just for the rich and powerful. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) have the power to empower and break down the barriers to entry into several industries that are still controlled by Tech Giants and global corporations.

In an increasingly interconnected world, the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to blur the lines between the physical and digital worlds. However, centralized IoT networks are incapable of meeting the demands for security, reliability, scalability, privacy, and data ownership.

Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) preserve many of the benefits of centralized models while offering many added advantages. Thus, they represent one of crypto's biggest and most exciting trends and have the potential to drive the next significant wave of people into Web3.

Centralized physical infrastructure networks simply lack the resources to bridge the digital divide and provide essential services to marginalized people and communities, even in fully developed countries like the US. According to an official report, about 14.5 million people in the United States lack internet access. Globally, about 2.5 billion people lack connectivity, a scarcity only DePIN can resolve.

The lack of access to electricity is also a global problem. According to The Rockefeller Foundation report, more than 840 million people still live without access to electricity. Centralized entities lack the resources to fill this demand.

DePINs, powered by blockchain, will unlock IoT’s true potential, enabling people and communities to deploy distributed internet connectivity, energy grid systems, and cloud storage servers. DePINs have the power to change the lives of billions of people. With new technology available today that makes it cheaper and quicker to deploy DePINs, the sector has the potential to outperform all other Web3 sectors and transform the world for the better.

Centralized IoT issues

Centralized IoT ecosystems present significant issues. High maintenance and infrastructure costs make these models expensive, while their scalability and reliability are limited due to potential failure points in cloud servers, which disrupt entire networks.

Furthermore, the connectivity of these centralized networks makes them appealing targets for hackers, resulting in security concerns. IoT devices can be insecure, and a compromised device could potentially attack other devices on the network. For example, the practice of using default passwords for millions of smart devices makes them vulnerable to hacks.

As the number of devices connected via IoT grows, current centralized networks could face bottlenecks. They would need to make significant investments in servers and risk network-wide failures if a server becomes unavailable.

Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, and other IoT networks are threatened by a single point of failure. Because blockchain is decentralized and distributed, it's a "never down" network with no single point of failure, so magnitudes are less exposed to cybercriminals.

For example, a 2022 report by AWS Maniac shows Amazon has had at least 18 major outages in a decade, including several that left hundreds, if not thousands, of people outside their smart homes. According to Firewall Times, it has also suffered nearly 20 data or security breaches between 2012 and 2023, during which hackers stole millions of users' personal information.

Conversely, DePINs promote a distributed model, significantly reducing the risk of system-wide failures and cyberattacks. Each node in a DePIN operates independently, ensuring that the network continues to function even if one node fails. That translates into superior reliability and security, as no single point of failure can compromise the entire network.

Solving the 'unsolvable'

DePIN addresses urgent, fundamentally unsolvable social problems with existing centralized infrastructure. The issue of too little supply of physical infrastructure is out of the control of the users who rely on the service.

Blockchain solves most of the issues centralized IoT represents. It enables the deployment of community-owned infrastructure that, among other benefits, removes intermediaries and elevated overhead costs, gives users back data and identity ownership, unlocks a massive new sharing economy, and brings greater transparency and security to the networks.

To fully unlock the power of IoT, we must move from a centralized system to one where previously siloed ecosystems interact in a decentralized manner, enabling people globally to participate and benefit from the real-world economy and allowing passionate entrepreneurs to launch projects previously only possible by financially powerful firms. And as a result, this will enable innovation never imagined, which can only be enabled by open, decentralized networks.

The Scale of Scalability

Scalability is a significant concern for centralized IoT networks. As the number of connected devices explodes, these networks are strained beyond their limits, leading to inefficiencies and performance issues. DePINs, by their very nature, are highly scalable.

DePINs can handle exponential growth in connected devices without a proportional increase in infrastructure or cost. In a DePIN, each additional node brings additional processing power, storage, and bandwidth, ensuring the network grows more robust as it expands.

DePIN also solves scalability issues because of its massively interconnected and borderless mesh network, which can coordinate and allocate physical and digital resources on demand to areas where they are needed.

Privacy and Data Ownership: The User-centric Approach

In an age where data is the new oil, people are becoming increasingly aware of its value. Centralized IoT networks often harvest user data, giving the central entity complete control over its use and who has access to it. This raises serious concerns about privacy and data ownership.

Instead,, DePINs put users back in control of their data. In a DePIN, data is stored locally on individual devices rather than a central server, ensuring users retain ownership and control over their data. Furthermore, encryption and anonymization techniques like zero-knowledge proof and Ascon (a group of cryptographic algorithms) can be utilized at the device level, ensuring that personal data remains secure and private.

Rapid Growth Potential of DePINs The advantages of DePINs over centralized IoT networks are clear, so DePINs are poised for rapid growth. The technology is still in its early stages but has garnered significant interest from tech companies, investors, and users alike. The demand for secure, reliable, scalable, and private IoT networks is higher than ever, and DePINs are well-positioned to meet this demand.

With exciting new DePIN infra and tool providers that abstract away the several layers of complexities developers face in building physical infrastructure networks, deploying these types of decentralized networks is far more accessible than ever before.

Furthermore, adopting blockchain technology and smart contracts in the IoT space further enhances the prospects for DePINs. These technologies provide a secure, transparent, and immutable platform for IoT transactions, further enhancing their security and reliability.

The future is decentralization

The future of IoT is decentralized. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks efficiently and reliably address the fundamental flaws in centralized IoT networks. As awareness grows around the value of personal data and the shortcomings of centralized networks, DePINs are set to grow at an unprecedented rate, unlocking the IoT's true potential.

That growth is expected to be even more significant with new, innovative infra and tools that enable developers to deploy DePINs in weeks instead of years and at a meager cost compared with developing a decentralized physical infrastructure network from scratch.
